3 Fun Winter Activities to Try in Mammoth

Winter is one of the best times to enjoy all that Mammoth has to offer. With deep winter snows and long cool summers that preserve mountain’s snowpack, Mammoth has some of the best backcountry conditions in the western U.S. But here’s the best part: Our Mammoth condo rentals are close to all of the best winter activities.

Here are three Mammoth Mountain winter activities that are just a short distance from our Mammoth Lakes rentals.

Snowshoeing on Mammoth Mountain

Snowshoeing is a fun way to explore and enjoy the outdoors in the winter. Take in the scenery at your own pace as you traverse through frosted pine trees and frozen lakes. Mammoth has several groomed trails for multi-use, but if you’re feeling adventurous, you can go off the beaten path and explore just about anywhere you like.

The Main Lodge to Minaret Vista is a moderate to difficult trail that’s five miles round-trip (about 3-4 hours). The groomed trail is shared with cross-country skiers and snowmobiles. While moderately difficult, the trail leads you through the Jeffery pine forest and eventually opens up to stunning views of the Minarets and Ritter range.

If you’re looking for an easy trail, give Panorama Dome a try. This trail is 0.8 miles one way (1.6 miles round trip) and takes about two hours to complete. While short and easy, Panorama Dome doesn’t disappoint. You’ll make your way through the forest to the summit where you’ll enjoy views of the Sherwin Range, the White Mountains, and the Glass Mountains.

mountaineering on mammoth mountain

Looking for a little more adventure? Mammoth Lakes has many opportunities for ice climbing in the winter.

While climbing opportunities are easily accessible, even experienced climbers should consider using a local guide service. Classes are also available at the Sierra Mountain Center, which will get you acquainted with Mammoth Lakes and the sport of climbing. There are also mountaineering supply stores that will gear you up, and plenty of guide services to help you enjoy your adventure safely.

Ice climbing can be found at June Lake and Lee Vining Canyon.

June Lake is just 20 minutes north of Mammoth Lakes, and it offers one- and two-pitch climbs that are easily accessible. June Lake is ideal for beginners who want to start honing their skills before moving on to a more difficult climb.

Lee Vining Canyon is great for both beginners and advanced climbers. Known as a premier ice climbing destination, Lee Vining Canyon has dozens of routes ranging from one to three pitches. It’s also one of the best places in the nation for ice climbing instruction.

The ice climbing season starts in December and runs through March, depending on the weather.

While riskier than other winter activities in the area, mountaineering gives you the chance to explore the true wilderness in ways skiing, snowmobiling and snowshoeing can’t offer.

Snow Cat tours on Mammoth Mountain

Snowcat Tours

For a truly unique winter activity, take a snowcat tour. Tours, which are operated by Mammoth Mountain, give you the chance to explore the backcountry from the comfort of a heated snowcat.

Each vehicle can hold up to 12 people, so it’s a great activity for families or large groups. There are also two tour times available on weekends and some holidays.

The Minaret Vista midday tour departs at 11:30 am and takes you to Minaret Vista, where you can take in unparalleled views of the Mammoth Lakes skyline. This tour also includes snacks, like cheese, fresh fruit, and charcuterie. Kids can enjoy hot cocoa and a waffle sundae.

The Minaret Vista Apres Ski Tour is the perfect way to unwind after a day on the slopes. Take in the views while snacking on chocolate-covered strawberries, a charcuterie board and a glass of wine. Kids can enjoy hot cocoa and a waffle sundae. Then, head back to one of our Mammoth Lakes vacation rentals for a relaxing evening.

Along with these three fun activities, Mammoth has opportunities for cross-country skiing, snowmobiling and more. There are several Mammoth ski rentals that can outfit you and your traveling companions with all the gear you need to hit the slopes. The tour starts at 3 pm – just in time for sunset. Mammoth Lakes is the perfect winter getaway. Our townhouses and condos for rent have everything you need to enjoy a comfortable stay, and our convenient location gives you easy access to all of the area’s exciting winter activities.
