Full-moon Cross-country Ski and Snowshoe Tours at Mammoth Mountain

We invite you to explore Mammoth at night. If you’ve never done a snowshoe tour at dark with the full moon shining, you haven’t fully experienced the grandeur of the mountain yet. This is an event you won’t forget – available from December through April.

There are a few options: Mammoth Lakes Basin, Rock Creek, and Minaret Vista, all available from the Tamarack Cross-Country Ski Center. Average distance is 2.5 to 5 miles. So bundle up (yes, even more than normal) and get ready for a 90-minute adventure!

Minaret Vista

Minaret Vista is part of the Mammoth Lakes Trail System and offers a signature skyline that’s perfect for anyone getting out of their Mammoth condo rentals to explore the area day or night. If you want to stargaze, Minaret Vista is a great choice.

Banner Peak and Mount Ritter can be seen in the distance, both spanning over 12,000 feet in height. Tourists go Mammoth snowshoeing at night or cross-country skiing to stargaze.

Nighttime tours allow for group tours where you can stargaze in a group setting, meet new people, and enjoy the quiet of the mountains.

Minaret Vista is 9,265 feet up and is the most popular destination for views.

A perk of our snowbird vacation rentals, Minaret Vista offers a forested route that spans for miles. You can start at the Main Lodge and make your way to the Reds Meadow Entrance, which is just under a three-mile walk.

Make sure to look up at the night sky on your way up to the top of the Vista.

Rock Creek

Rock Creek is a trek that we recommend to everyone visiting Mammoth Mountain. You’ll find tours that can help bring you up to Rock Creek Lake, or you can tackle the cross-country trails on your own.

The entire loop is about five miles in length between Rock Creek Lake and SnoPark.

The effort is worth the views when you reach Rock Creek Lake. You’ll climb up to an open canyon with views of the surrounding peaks.

Mammoth Lakes Basin

Mammoth Lakes Basin is an oasis for outdoor enthusiasts, with beautiful pines and the Sierra Nevada Range surrounding guests. Guided tours are recommended by any of the four main ski lodges of Mammoth for anyone wanting to visit the Basin for the first time.

You can follow the winter access corridor, which will allow you to have beautiful, uninterrupted views of the area.

You’ll be presented with a beautiful lake that reflects the full moon in a postcard-worthy style. An after-dark adventure is worth the trek. Tours often include hot beverages and the chatter of other guests.

Skiing and Snowshoeing Events

The Tamarack Cross-Country Ski Center will open on November 23, weather permitting. If the weather allows, you’ll be able to explore 19 miles of secluded trails. You can strap on snowshoes or skis and explore the grounds. Lessons and rentals are offered, too.

Races and events are held throughout the season, with major events being held in December through February. During the heart of the Nordic season, family fun events include the Tannenbaum 10KM Classic, which is held in mid-December and offers distances of 1–10 kilometers.

Guided tours are also available and offer a family-friendly experience that’s perfect when trying to escape the hustle and bustle of the Los Angeles and San Diego areas. Families will have a lot to explore outside of their Mammoth Lakes rentals.

Additional Events to Enjoy in Mammoth Lakes

When you put your skis and snowshoes down for the day, you’ll find that there are plenty of other events that you can enjoy in Mammoth Lakes. A few of the family-friendly events that we recommend are:

Visit the Mammoth Ice Rink, which opens at the end of November. The ice rink offers a fun way to get the entire family together and is located on Sierra Park Road. Close to our accommodations, the rink opens following the Holiday Tree Lighting.

Minaret Road is home to the Holiday Tree Lighting in the Village. You’ll be able to jump into the holiday season with family-friendly activities, live music, and food. If you miss the lighting, you can still stop by the tree to take pictures.

Be sure to check out the local activities throughout the season, including youth hockey camps held by the LA Kings, Reindeer Crawl, Night of Lights and more.

Our rentals in Mammoth Lakes offer lodging close to all of this season’s top events. Come out and see the full moon and stargaze at one of our Mammoth Lakes condos.
